Snoop Dogg and Eminem Bring Weed and the Metaverse Center Stage at the VMAs

Yes, I said “Weed.” All this “Cannabis” talk is too proper sometimes.

Eminem and Snoop Dogg gave a whole new meaning to “joint performance” on Sunday (8/28) at the 2022 MTV VMA’s, while bringing the rest of the audience into the metaverse.

The performance took place on the couch, like most smoke seshes do, as the two rap legends delivered their Best Hip Hop-nominated single “From the D 2 the LBC” with the help of Yuga Labs‘ most popular NFT, the Bored Ape Yacht Club, to bring visually bring the performance to life. The duet’s animations connect Em’s hometown, Detroit and Snoop’s stomping grounds, Long Beach California, giving viewers a unique view into the collection of these cartoon ape non-fungible tokens.

After a couple of pulls, Snoop and Em smoke themselves into the metaverse, turning into animated and anthropomorphized versions of themselves in technicolor backgrounds.

Em starts off saying “It’s been a minute…this probably should of happened a while ago,” before lighting up the mic with lyrics giving respect to the D-O-Double-G for always having the bomb weed, taking aim at racist TV chef Paula Dean, and offering a natural homage to Dr. Dre for his debut studio album, The Chronic. It is true – it has been a minute. “From the D 2 The LBC” is the first time Snoop Dogg and Eminem collab’d together in over 20 years, since the two appeared on The Marshall Mathers LP track,” Bitch Please II.”

The brightly colored animations showed off their weed-toting alter egos before the two returned back to the Prudential Center as their real-life selves joined by a six-piece band.

Shortly after their performance, legends Cheech Martin and Tommy Chong announced the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but not before Chong joked about the real reason he was on stage, saying, “We just wandered over here because we smelled that last performance.”

Although Eminem has been a famously clean artist for quite some time now, the song is more for smokers who don’t mind a weed pun here or there. Snoop, no doubt, is the king of the plant. Fun Fact: He even got tight with Fifty A.K.A. Ferrari, F. Fifty when he told him of the “No Smoking” policy on the BMF set. Also, Leafs By Snoop is a dead giveaway.

This latest collaboration is the latest single off of Eminem’s greatest hits album, Curtain Call 2.
