Because, of course Frank knows all of this.
To know Shameless is to know William H. Macy‘s Frank Gallagher, the deadbeat present father who has spent a life of mooching, boozing, and hooking up with anyone who has a hole. Despite his sewage ways, season after season Frank has proved to be much smarter than he leads on. Don’t let his homeless stench fool you. Frank knows a thing or two – most certainly about cannabis.
During Ep 1101, while at The Alibi, we see the Green Rush has hit the Southside so naturally, Veronica (Shanola Hampton) and Kev (Steve Howie) are working on taking their piece. While talking about the rise in popularity of cannabis in America, Vee points out the obvious – that it was Black people who caught on early to the benefits of marijuana. However, to further the then-newly abolished Jim Crow, law enforcement decided to lock Black people up for it instead. Now that white people like it, “they just have to make it legal,” so here we are.
She told no lies.
Although Vee’s potent pot brownies slap to the point of regrettable of decisions, edibles are to be enjoyed, not coma-inducing. For the most part, Vee had plenty right. Where she messed up at though — she’s Black in Chicago, relying on dispensaries. Seriously, she doesn’t have one bud man?
It takes Frank to point out the obvious, that the government has no stake on the weed that is grown. This is how Frank snakes his way into the business. He, unlike Vee, has a connect.
Now that you have some background, let’s get into the mari gems.
While cooking up the actual buds in Vee’s kitchen, Frank asks, “Did you fry the marijuana in butter first?” When Vee replys, “What’s the difference,” he factually explains,
It’s the difference between a ghetto pot brownie and a culinary delight. By frying the weed, you activate the cannabinoids.”
Of course, the cannabinoids are what we know as THC, tetrahydrocannabinol and CBD, cannabidiol. What you may not know is that in it’s regular form, the cannabinoids are inactive as it contains tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA) and cannabidiolic acid (CBDA). While the way you fry it determines how much THC and CBD would retain, the health benefits of using cannabutter to cook edibles are undeniable. When decarb’d correctly, it helps with sleep, nausea, pain, and vomiting.
He further explains that the “lipids in the butter bond with the weed to form the perfect cannabis infusion.”
Actual factuals. Cannabinoids bind best to lipids or fat, making butter the perfect carrier.
At twenty 2 x 2 squares, equal size and shape — Frank is coming up at 20 bucks a pop. Judging by the way Frank acquired the weed, manufactured the butter, made the brownies, and the sales, not-to-mention his extensive knowledge on all things mind-altering, it doesn’t look like he’d need Vee and Kev after-all.
Leave it to Frank to wholly benefit off a hustle that 1. Many Black people are locked up for and 2. He stole from his friends.
That Gallagher.
This is the final season of Shameless, so if you need more edible tips from Frank, now is the time to tune in for them.
